Hello Austin,

You question can not be answered unless you provide some extra details. Ill cover most of the possibilities, that way you find one relevant to you.

Firstly, are you running your own server or joining one?

If you are running your own then the decision on the way in which to communicate is yours. You can use the built in voice functionality, which means that players can only communicate via either the FSX Chat Box and typing or by dialling in a frequency and speaking through that.

The problem with the FSX voice is that with so many different possibilities of frequencies you could have users all over the show and not know where they are. The other reason is that by enabling this feature your computer is also acting as a voice server and hence requires more bandwidth.

Most sessions opt for the other way type of communicating which is via a VoIP application such as TeamSpeak, Ventrillo or even Mumble. Some groups may host their own voice server however because of the complications of maintenance, many opt for a paid hosting service. An application like TeamSpeak is far superior (in my eyes) when compared to the default FSX voice. It allows you to see what rooms other people are on, restrict their access to rooms, create new rooms etc.

If your hosting your own server you have the choice.

If, however, you are joining an already setup server then the way to check the voice type they are using is via the FSOpen Session list. On that table you will see a colour titled 'Voice Type'. It will say either FSX, TeamSpeak, Ventrillo.... Clicking on that like, providing you have the relevant client installed will automatically join you to the server (also providing the host has enabled that function. This does not apply to FSX voice types).

Some servers will require you to be in their voice server if your flying in their session. Others such as us at FSXMultiplay only require you to be in TeamSpeak if you a) want to have a chat with other members or b) are flying in controlled airspace or around other players.

Hopefully that answers your question.

Regards

Joe
