Isak Kindgren ![]() 4th Feb 2011 20:22:41 | Hello fellas!
I'm thinking about upgrading my processor and my graphics card. The processor from an i5 660 Dual to an i7 2600 Quad. And the graphics card FSX runs on the two cores of my processor. You guys think it's worth it. To show you what I mean I'll show you a youtube movie I've uploaded: |
Joe Lewis ![]() 4th Feb 2011 21:50:23 | Depends on your preference
I want to fly like in real life not 'look' like real life. Set everything to the left/off, turn clouds to the right, get some REX clouds too. Turn water off, terrain etc. Turn mesh complexity and res to full, Autogen / airport complexity to full. Then get an addon airport. No good having looks when there's no fully functional plane. In real life the only time you get to look out the window is when you're at cruise (in a jet), so outside is nothing. But addon scenery is a MUST HAVE, otherwise you will get rubbish night lighting wish is terrible. In real life, at night, airports are extremely well lit. On FSX Default airports at night, it's pitch dark, there's no apron flood lights, nothing. Oh and the fact you get auto docking systems to line up from the VC. Sometimes even a Marshaller (For example UK2000 EGCC has a marshaller). I use VFR real scenery as it doesn't kill performance, but looks more realistic, so that's a two in one. I also fly the proper mans planes (:D) PMDG MD-11, PMDG 747-400/F/8i/8F, LDS 767-300ER. Combined with a top notch 100% system simulated aircraft, good payware addon scenery for your fav airport, and everything turned off but clouds, plus HD REX clouds, you're at the best balance if you want to fly like the real pros. But if you want just looks and visuals and fly the default planes just get a i7 920/980x, overclock it to 4GHz+, 580/480GTX, 8GB DDR3 RAM, 2x 10K RPM Velociraptor HDD, and you're good to go. Don't forget a decent Sound card and two monitors!! But for me it's the pro stuff. 100% systems, realistic airports and skys as we're supposed to be FLYING not sight-seeing unless you like VFR! The ground makes no difference to me, but as I said it's personal preference, some people like visuals some people like realism. |
Joe Lewis ![]() 4th Feb 2011 21:52:45 | When I said autogen/airport complexity to full, I meant 'Scenery Complexity' .. Not autogen, big frame killer and it doesn't make your flying any better.
AES is apparently good but I can't be bothered to get it. Apparently it has all the airport marshallers, ground crews, EPW equipment, wheel chocks, you name it. But as I said preference |
Dave Wave ![]() 5th Feb 2011 10:20:10 | FSX likes 4 cores, anymore is wasted as is hyperthreading. I'd be tempted to go for an i5-2500k with 4 cores. The i7-2600k has 8Mb cache instead of 6Mb but isn't worth the premium. So my recommended fsx performnce rig would be.
i7-2500k Nice air cooler (Noctura or similar) 1600MHz or 2000MHz Low latency RAM Nvidia 560/570/580 (570 is good value, 560 to save money, 580 premium price) Overclock to 4.7 GHz (You need to be careful and reseach this but is very easy on this chip) Solid state drives will load fsx faster at start but will not give you higher fps. Intel announced a bug this week that effects every motherboard currently on sale for the Sandy Bridge range so unless you are very quick I doubt you will be able to buy the above until replacememnts arrive in March. Would I upgrade? If I had some spare money then probably yes. I'd expect your frame rate to double. Looking forward you might want to consider what type of machine would be good for Microsoft Flight. I'd expect this to take advantage of the latest processors at launch time (e.g. AVX instructions, 8/10/12 cores, hyperthreading etc) For a flight simmer I'd expect this to be a good point to upgrade your PC. So if you upgrade now can you afford to do so again when Flight comes out? Can you manage for 12/18/24 months with what you have now. With your current machine I would upgrade but I am not upgrading my current i7 as I don't think I'd see a great improvment. I can live without autogen and achieve 40fps nearly everywhere. Only you can decide! |
Isak Kindgren ![]() 5th Feb 2011 13:15:02 | Okey, don't think I will upgradew that much:) don't have those money right now! Thanks for your advices! |
