Dave Wave   15th Oct 2009 16:16:58 | More then half of you are registered with the teamspeak server now. At the moment it's more of a lounge where you can check in before sessons start or chat to friends during a flight. Both of which are fine by us.
If you're doing ATC it's a useful place to monitor. Tom's FSX crashed last night, quick call to me that he was going to be offline for 5 minutes and I could relay this info to pilots under his control. So much nicer then wondering if ATC is going to reappear or not. Longer term, if our sessions continue to increase in popularity, we will have to move to teamspeak full time to ensure our sessions remain stable. Although our server is fast with a high speed link, all voice traffic is sent to it, proccessed and redistributed. This eats into bandwidth and server workload and at some point we'll hit a limit. By moving to TS the server workload is greatly reduced and we can have more pilots on line. One of the downsides to using TS is you need to switch windows to change channel in TS then back to FSX again. This is a real pain especially if running FSX in full screen mode. To overcome this I will be looking at writing a small prog that automatically syncs your Com1 radio to the TS channel so you do not have to change windows. Once this app is out I'm all ready thinking of extra funtionallity that I could add. If ATC add extra info to their tower I could inject this into the FSX message that appears within the main fsx window. This might allow ATC to publish their own ATIS on a seperate freq (Active runway, ILS info) or just basic info on changing freq, e.g. Birmingham Approach, just state Callsign and flight level on contact. Might as well add functionallity to file a flight plan from the app as will using a nice form, certainlly easier and more reliable then using the chat box! Thinking even further ahead, no reason why we can't add functionallity to send messages between players. (Message would appear within fsx), or good way to distribute message to all players at once e.g. Edinburgh Airport closing in ten minutes. Let me have your ideas and thoughts. Dave. |
