| Some Food for Thought | |
Paul Edmond 25th Mar 2011 23:37:11 | As some of you may know I've been on fsopen for quite a bit now. It seems approaching a year now to me joining. Quite the milestone it would seem. A milestone, yes. Memorable? Meh. I've not been as active in the last month or so as I have been able to be and ive been away from it all. What I have been observing from the sideline is akin to some horrid own goals. I have noticed a darker side to people that mabye I had not seen before. Perhaps in my giddy excitement to take my hobby forward I had been blinded. Some events that have made me think about this community and some of its members. This community has some wonderful people in it and thanks to them I have some amazing and funny memories. Some not. I'm not angry nor am I "vengeful" just disappointed. I think that the motto of " No politics, just flying" seems to have been lost in translation somewhere along the lines. I had been pondering my inactive role for some time and now im thinking again. Is it wanted or warranted? Possibly if I was that same giddy joiner again. It would seem however I am not. Its just some food for thought. I now prepare myself for the forthcoming thoughts and comments should they arise that disagree. If I have offended or some of you think this is not welcome then what is the point in a "Forum" |
Graeme Brown ![]() 26th Mar 2011 01:34:53 | Paul,
I have flown with a number of communities over the years, mainly based in the US, and in invariably some disharmony develops. Often I think this arises inadvertently due to misinterpretation or miscommunication due to the lack of face to face contact. In any large enough group there will always be cases where some individuals have their own ideas or motives. However I would say try and keep the faith. The vast majority of those on FSopen are making it a really great place to fly. |
Mick McG ![]() 26th Mar 2011 11:43:44 | Hi Paul,
Ah, how refreshing it is to see someone prepared to put their (some might say contraversial) thoughts down to provoke some discussion. I'm with Graeme though; the silent majority of active members just get on with having an good time on line. Many more posts on the forum are read than are replied to - natural enough I think, but if there was a concern about the direction we're moving in, I think it would be reflected here first (along with many more regulars drifting away and not returning). I don't think we're seeing that. I've recently been invited to join "the management" so you'd expect me to take the party line. However, I enjoy the role of being devils advocate and I'm not too worried about voicing my honest opinions when I think it's required. I hear what you're saying but your post is a little short on examples for me be swayed by your argument. Damn; Running out of time....will post now and will return ass soon as I can - maybe a couple of hours though..... |
Paul Edmond 26th Mar 2011 12:41:52 | Yeah Mick I would post the examples but I wanted this post to simply be a reminder about what we stand for. Im not wanted to publicly accuse certain people of anything at this stage. It would seem slightly childish to so that considering nothing has happened to me as such. Still I wanted this post to simply be a reminder to some people about why we are here and what we stand for. |
Mick McG ![]() 26th Mar 2011 13:45:53 | H'o Paul, I'm back - for a few minutes anyway - lol,
Could your thoughts be the result of only seeing half (and the public half at that) of the debate? The only reason I ask is that whilst I think I have an idea where you're coming from (ie one or two posts/responses on the forum?), I'm not completely sure. If it is, I think Graeme's point is spot on - forum posts are notoriously difficult to correctly interpret due, in part to poor grammar and puntuation techniques (said Mick whose posts are full of crap grammar and punctuation, lmao) but also because - lets face it - some posts are written to provoke a reaction. Sometimes for a laugh, other times not. I'd be interested to hear if anyone else has any concerns about our "no politics" stance though. Personally, I don't think we have any political issues - there will be and have been occasions where misunderstandings take place, but these are generally sorted out very quickly. Let's not forget, discipline is not politics! If someone is arseing about in the server, they will be kicked. If someone is booted by mistake, they have a right to reply in TS or on this forum. If someone, me for example, is getting trigger happy and booting people for no good reason - bring to the attention of one of the other managers. Danm, I'm just getting going but I'm being beckoned again. The hassle a parent of teenage offspring has to put up with!! Anyway, you all get my drift. Post your thoughts here if you're not happy about the direction we're going in as an FSX community - I assure you your posts will be taken seriously at the next managers meeting. And if you ARE happy with your FSopen experience, tell us that too! Looking forward to some interesting replies. M |
Joe Clifford ![]() 26th Mar 2011 14:16:49 | I think that you are spot on Mick. I personally feel that FSopen is a great place for those who enojoy Real flying/Virtual Flighing, allowing them to learn from others, teach others and enjoy each others company while online.
I must admit that its true, there are people out there that randomly join the server to get in the way but that is why there is the ability to kick/wallop people. On the 'No Politics, Just Flying' debate, FSopen is a bit of fun, enjoyable! No Politics just means that we have rules, but not over the top pointless ones. We, as members, and not restriced to flying to certain places, as long as we dont ruin it for others. Hope I am making sense. Anyways Im off for a SId & Star flight to manchester. Need to get one more flight done before I will go and ask for a flying eval. Also Looking forward to some interesting replies :p Joe |
Paul Humphries ![]() 26th Mar 2011 15:09:13 | Hmmmm, where to start?
Ok I guess my comments would be seen as coming from the “company line,” but as Mick states I could offer some thoughts / waffle here. I joined FSOpen over 6 months ago now and have learnt a great deal from many of the members. Running FSOpen takes a lot of effort by the managers which not really seen on the surface. I have genuinely only seen and heard good things from its members which convinces me that all the time and effort I put in makes it worthwhile. Any forum is a great place to share thoughts / ideas / and the lighter side of life and should be welcomed. Because “forum posts are notoriously difficult to correctly interpret due, in part to poor grammar and punctuation techniques” they can also be very dangerous or even worse very destructive so I tend to avoid these sort of posts like the plague! (Typing with a raised smile) LOL the fact I have responded to the post really goes against what I am trying to say. My own belief, and what I would ask any FSOpen member to do if you have a problem or concern, no matter how big or small, is to “talk” 1-2-1 with a manager on TS. I cannot guarantee you would always get the answer you want, but talking about it, you would get the right tone and style in the communication. Asking members to do this is not about “brushing things under the carpet.” Final point. If you have an issue, please talk about it. If you feel you need to post, please, please, please be very careful as to how it could be misinterpreted no matter how innocent the comment was meant to be. Cheers, Paul. |
Geoff Server ![]() 27th Mar 2011 18:59:17 | Lots of words but, no content! |
Paul Edmond 27th Mar 2011 19:23:43 | I dont quite get where you are coming from geoff. Do you want examples? |
Geoff Server ![]() 27th Mar 2011 21:03:51 | Not really because, if you had an important point to make in the first place you would have posted it on your first post for discussion with all the members.
Or, if it was a really important matter as a responsible FSOpen member you would have spoken to a manager to clarify things before posting anyting I am sure. |
Paul Edmond 27th Mar 2011 21:12:06 | Just because I dont necessarily make a sweeping point should not mean I dont have a point to make. Believe me if I had wanted to I could make quite a few points. I wanted this post to reitirate the point to some people who seem to have lost sight of the real reason we are here. Anyway that opinion I have is a point. Is it not? |
Mick McG ![]() 28th Mar 2011 08:51:13 | Paul, the real reason I'M here (and I suspect it's the same for most folks) is because I love flying and I can't afford the time or money to pursue this activity outside FSX.
There aren't too many other servers out there where you'll get the same commitment, support and expertise as is available FREE on here. And it's such a laugh! Talk to us in TS if you still have a beef mate, there'll be a few of us on later on tonight. Trouble with forum conversations is it always reads like we're having a p!$$3d up argument rather than a sensible discussion and we don't want that do we? Cheers, M |
Dave Wave ![]() 28th Mar 2011 09:05:36 | I've interpreted Paul's post as trying to be helpful in saying that we need to remember that it’s not politics its flying we need to concentrate on.
However, he does say we've scored some own goals but doesn't say what they are. So as a reader I do not know what Paul is referring too and there is a danger that readers will jump to wrong conclusions. I’m guilty of this far too often! As others say, if you have a gripe, best talk face to face so you know your issue is understood. |
Dave Bamber 30th Mar 2011 17:09:51 | Hey guys
forum is about being able to post what you want to say!!! FSopen is about enjoying the flying in a congenial environment!!! Managers are about putting the effort in!!! Its a great environment and if i have ever had to raise a subject whether it be on a one to one or on the forum i have always had a response and any matters resolved. Without content however, supposition potentially implied, i dont know how the managers can ever give you an answer. Hope the grammer is ok!!!LOL |
