Paul Humphries ![]() 17th Apr 2011 17:34:47 | Took my youngest to East midlands Airport this afternoon with a cheap little scanner that not only picks up civil air band but will also pick up the F1 team radio for when we go to Silverstone this year.
Anyhow runway in use was 27 QNH was 1024 and light northerly winds, which I understood and was really quite chuffed at how much I understood! Here were my notes on the day. ATIS stated no ground controller so Ground and Tower were bandboxed. IFR Daventry SID clearances were given as follows… “You are cleared to _ _ _ _ _ on the Daventry 3N departure climb to FL 90, Squawk _ _ _ _. I thought I had heard it wrong 1st time round but they issued the SID FL90 every time for a southerly departure? Lots of left hand orbits for the VFR circuit to make way for inbound IFR on finals. A C172 on RH base had continue across to the left hand side and then do a 270 degree LH turn once the IFR traffic had crossed the threshold It took 1 pilot 4 attempts to get the frequency change right, so hope for me yet lol! The sun shone and we found a great place to spectate right by the side of taxiway A at A2. A really chilled out Sunday afternoon, must take the video camera next time! |
Isak Kindgren ![]() 17th Apr 2011 19:04:45 | Sounds nice Paul, the scanner you talks about, where did you find it? I've been looking for one for a while now. How much did it cost, if more than 150 then I'm not interested.

Paul Humphries ![]() 17th Apr 2011 19:21:04 | This was a secondhand Uniden XLT 72 Bearcat.
£140 RRP new but you can pick them up on ebay for half that price. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/NEW-Uniden-UBC-72-XLT-Scanner-/130505057654 |
Graeme Brown ![]() 17th Apr 2011 20:42:20 | I recently bought one on e-bay. It was the first time I had used one and didn't know what to expect. I got a Commtel? for about £30 and it works great. I can pick up Edinburgh ATIS from my home over 20 miles away! |
