LNAV controlls the heading.
VNAV controlls the speed and altitude.
If you turn them on and they swith off again within 1 second.
Then you have not programmed the FMC correctly
Make sure your route is filed correctly, in the "LEGS" page you can edit and check your route.
The data on the left is the waypoint
The data on the right is the altitude and speed

When you try to turn the AutoPilot on, does it gives you a warning in the FMC?

And also, make sure your IRS switches are on, and the IRS is fully alligned

Tam,

Only about 500 hrs on the 747 but I think the AFDS is pretty much the same for the 767, In the 767 we can arm LNAV and VNAV before the autopilot is engaged, and while it is engaged, but for VNAV, if it won't arm or engage, it's usually because the performance/weight data on the PERF init page of the FMC isn't filled in correctly. If LNAV won't engage, then it's usually because you're not on what we call an intercept heading, I believe the 747 won't fly on a LNAV route unless you are about 130 degrees radius to it, or if the route hasn't been EXECuted, or has a discontinuity. Check the LEGS and RTE (+NEXT PAGE) pages, make sure there is no route discontinuities, if there is, get rid of it, if there's not, make sure the route is ACT not MOD. If you're planning on taking off and flying to a fix on the FMC that's in the opposite direction, it could be because you're not on intercept heading, the FMC should tell you if you aren't. You can use HDG SEL to get on course then engage LNAV when your magneta dashed line intercepts the solid magneta line (The LNAV route). If the IRS (Intertial Reference System) is not aligned the FMC doesn't know where it is. The LNAV uses the IRS to position itself unlike some older planes that use INS systems like the older MD-80s. If the EADI (767) or PFD (747/737) shows the artificial horizon, it is aligned. Check the POS page of the FMC and make sure you have line selected the last known coordinates into the empty boxes (for a 767, think it's the same for a 747) and EXECuted, or you can manually jot in the coordinates on the IRS panel.

If VNAV wont engage, then make sure your PERF INIT page is filled out, and TAKEOFF page, also check the LEGS page and see if the altitude/speed references/restrictions are there. If not, you have not filled the PERF INIT page correctly, the planes VNAV system can not calculate VNAV profiles with no performance data. If that's correct, go to the TAKEOFF page and check that the Vspeeds are filled in (V1,VR,V2). If they are not, then you haven't filled out either the PERF INIT or the TAKEOFF page correctly, refer to the manual or ask someone like Geoff or me when we are on.

If the autopilot won't engage, make sure the autopilot disengage bar is up (No orange/red showing above the big white bar underneath the autopilot CMD pushbuttons), if it's pulled down, autopilot won't engage. And the autopilot won't engage, for a 767, under 400 feet. I can't remember precisely for the 747, I think it was the same.

If none of this fixes anything, refer to google or the manuals. If you're new to complex planes (PMDG, Level-D), be patient, it's a steep learning curve. It will take time, they are not toys like the default jets. Fly the tutorial flights given in the manuals and you will learn the basics to fly the plane from A to B using automation, manual flying comes with lots of experience and comes after learning the autopilot (unlike other planes) because it will save you when flying these jets manually becomes a bit fast paced.

Just a quickie; Have you tried flying the jet manually, following the Flight Directors, up to approx 1200feet AGL, Not AMSL, then engaging the center autopilot?

Oh that reminds me, are both Flight Directors engaged?

And one more thing, if none of this works, and the manuals don't help, is the plane legit (You bought it) or pirated? If it's pirated, it may be because it has built in piracy protection, if it's legit, then contact Geoff or me on teamspeak. (Geoff is current on 747, im not, 767 ftw)..

If we cant sort it out, try unplugging any flight controls (eg, yoke/joystick, throttle rudder pedals, switch/afds panels, etc) and try it, there may be a conflict with hardware.

Last resort, try contacting PMDG.

Regards/ Joe
