Hey guys i need help in deciding on what I want put into a new Sony Vaio laptop.

It's either an Intel i5 processor for £120

Or an Intel i3 processor for £50 and then a "NVIDIA® GeForce® 410M GPU graphics processing unit with dedicated GDDR3Video Memory of 512 MB" for £40 as well.

it's one or the other as I am limited to funds.

here's a link hope you can help =)

In my opinion,

For work, you don't need the best gaming card so you can spend a little more on the processor.

For FSX, you can't fly on high graphics with an I3 but I also think you need a reasonable gaming card.

If you going to use it mainly for work, I would go for the I5

Anybody else suggestions?

Hey Pete,

I'll try and give you some of the benefit of my experirence when buying a laptop.

I have a Dell XPS 1530M, 6GB Ram and a Nvidia 8600GTm. I have now had this laptop for 5+ years. At the time it was a large expenditure but an invaluable investment.

I say investment because although it may not have saved me money it rewarded me with time. Spending that little bit extra saved me aggravation within a relatively short period of time and I don't have to look for a new laptop for another couple of years I would say.

Even now I can play all the new games, granted not at the highest settings but I don't have to turn everything down either.

Between the i5 and i3... definitely get the i5 but I would like to know if its the second generation i5 that you would be getting so perhaps you could post the processor number i.e. Intel® Core™ i5-2540M Processor (3M Cache, 2.60 GHz)

Depends on what your using it for mate, Laptops can't be overclocked, and the graphic cards are usually entry level. You don't need a super GPU for work etc, for FSX, Get a desktop, some say get a future proof desktop some say don't. FS11 is coming out, maybe a quad would be a good idea, but JUST for FSX, I'd say a overclocked dual core would be better, or spend tons on a i7-950 and a nvidia 5XX series GPU and that'll run FSX and be future proof, If I didn't use my PC for other things but FSX, I'd have gotten the E8400 and overclocked it to 3.6ghz- slap my old 9800GT in there, get a 1000rpm velociraptor HDD and call it a day.

But seeing as you're keen on a laptop get the i5 if only using for work related things (eg, office, excel, word), if it's for FSX too, don't expect too much but I'd say the i5 with a med level GPU I think it's the 260M or something I'm not too experienced with laptops. FSX wants cpu power and the gpu power is mainly used for things like water/textures, so turn off the water textures completely and it should be 'OK', don't expect miracles unless you have about £3000 to spend on a i7 desktop system!

Cheers guys, this is the type of i5 processor it has

"Intel® CoreTM i5-2410M, 2.3Ghz with Intel® Turbo Boost Technology up to 2.90 GHz with 3 MB L3 Cache"

I do know what you mean about having a good laptop John the laptop i used to use was a Dell Vostro 1800 but i broke a good few weeks back typing commands into the command prompt box and I can;t reinstall vista and i tried XP it just says the HDD can not be found, but i could do with a new smaller laptop as i will be doing a bit of traveling in the next few years =)

@Pete, Great, that is the second generation i5 so you will be getting bang for buck. The original HDD that came with my Dell failed too!

Have a look at this:
http://www.scan.co.uk/products/173-msi-fx720-014uk-led-intel-i5-4gb-500gb-sata-hdd-bt-hdmi-win-7-hp

@Joe, I expect Pete has realistic expectations about what to expect from FSX even with today's technology. There have been many threads and discussions about about the operational constraints in FSX with multiple core/thread CPU's. However I think its certainly unwise to purchase anything with less than 4 cores nowadays.
