John Elliott 26th Nov 2011 18:07:19 | Am a bit of a duffer when it comes to tech stuff and a friend has offered to build a pc for me and wondered if anyone has any comments or suggestions on the specs.
What he proposes is ... Coolermaster HAF 922 Mid Tower Case Intel Core i7 960 3.2 GHz Socket 1366 8MB L3 Cache Asus Sabertooth X58 Ocket 1366 8 HD Audio ATX Motherboard Corsair Vengeance 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 1866Mhz Memory Kit CL9 XFX HD 6870 900MHz 1GB GDDR5 Dual DVI Dual Mini DisplayPort HDMI PCI-E Graphics Card Fractal Design Arc Mini Case OCZ 60GB Agility 3 SSD - 2.5" SATA-III Read 525MB/s Write 475MB/s 80,000 IOPS WD 320GB 3.5" SATA III 6Gb/s Caviar Blue Hard Drive - 7200RPM 16MB Cache Coolermaster Silent Pro 1000W Modular PSU LiteON iHAS124-19 24x DVD+_ RW DL & RAM SATA Optical Drive - OEM Black with Nero Essentials Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 64-bit |
Tommy Steak 26th Nov 2011 18:33:55 | Very nice build, the sabertooth is a dream of a motherboard....
It looks like your opening your wallet, so double up on your solid state drive mate, you'll need to with ms flight, and all the extra downloads..... Corsair CSSD-F120GB3-BK Force Series 3 120GB Solid State Drive - Read 550MB/s, Write 510MB/s plus spend another £50 on a 2gb graphics card.... You'll be amazed at the difference..... |
Dave Wave ![]() 26th Nov 2011 18:52:13 | Your friend doesn't know what he's on about John.
X58 is a bit old hat so you'll have little upgrade path plus the memory on this platform should be installed in threes, so 6 or 12 GB is what you want not 8! If he doesn't know this then I wouldn't ask him to build a pc, you'd be better of buying ready built and getting a warranty. |
Tommy Steak 27th Nov 2011 02:55:23 | EVERYONE HAS DAVE's WAVES MONEY....................... |
Dave Wave ![]() 27th Nov 2011 09:56:03 | I don't understand your comment Tommy? I think you are implying that I am saying John needs to spend more money?
I actually think he could build/buy a much better pc for the same money. My point is his friend shouldn't build the pc as he doesn't understand the basics. |
Andy Mooring ![]() 27th Nov 2011 12:12:39 | John.
Dave is absolutely right. Its not worth getting a PC built by (and no disrespect to your friend) someone who may not have a clue what they are doing as it may turn out the machine won't work and you've wasted money. Your better off buying a PC from a recognised outlet, get someone to talk you thru the machines capabilities, get piece of mind and once your happy with your choice, pending price of course, go for it. You'll probably find that the PC you bourght will end up being CHEAPER than having one built from scratch with parts that may be faulty or damaged. I know what I'd do. Happy trails :o) |
John Elliott 27th Nov 2011 12:44:59 | Thanks for the input guys I really appreciate it. I decided that I was going to buy a new, good-spec and future proof system... I'm not a drinker or footie fan I reckon I can warrant the expense of around £1500 for something that is going to last. Unfortunately my current system dying has accelerated the plan for getting one.
I know little about tech and wonder if PC's have become like cars, with so many high tech components that home-builds n repairs are now way beyond even the most savvy home enthusiasts. Having been on flight sims since the early Microsoft Crop Duster (Chicago Meigs became my second home sometimes) it's a big hobby second only to my music. Anyhow, I'm waffling now... I think, following everyones advice I will buy purpose built from a reputable online company. Next question... have spent hours looking at several and I'm confused with the various spec. Any good suggestions ? Happy Flighting |
Craig Noble ![]() 27th Nov 2011 13:49:59 | Got mine from overclockers.co.uk they were very helpful with special builds. |
Dave Wave ![]() 27th Nov 2011 15:42:01 | Assuming this is really just for fsx then my advice would be to wait till April if you can for Ivy bridge and Nvidia 6**/ATI 7*** video cards.
If you can't wait then today I'd spend no more than £1000 on an overclocked i5-2500k with a GTX570 or 560ti. I'd expect to upgrade again maybe in 18 months for the next intel release (Haswell) but be prepared to change all plans depending on flight being released. |
Dave Wave ![]() 27th Nov 2011 15:45:14 | Forgot to ask, what monitor/s do you have now? |
