Hello All,

Decided to let you all know about the changes in FSOpen Pilots that have come into place recently.

Starting From The Top:

FSPilots - As you know, the flying community now has its own section of the site. This is accessible by clicking the ‘FSPilots’ link along the top navigation bar of the FSOpen Website! This contains all the information that you need to understand what is happening when, where, who, what and why.

We have a new banner! - I decided to create a banner specifically for ‘FSPilots’. The main image will remain on the site throughout the year. If anybody has any ideas of how to improve it, then let me know in TeamSpeak and I will see what we can come up with. You may have noticed that we now have an animated banner directly under it also. This will contain information about what FSPilots can provide to users. It can also be used to display event information or news that we would like you to know about. The banner will be seasonal; I have created a number of banners to fit in with the time of year and what’s happening in the server. With the help of Steff Missot’s coding the banner will automatically change when the time is right!

Server Information - All the server information, including: Server IP, Flight Plans and Maps, are now available from our FSPilots page. We hope this will be easier for you to find the information when you need it.
Weather - Within this table, you will now notice the link to ‘Liver Server Weather Information’. When clicked, a new window will appear allowing you to insert an Airport Code (ICAO) and receive the metar for that airport. Steff and I are working on a way to display the ‘FSOpen Weather’ in conjunction with the real world, allowing you to choose whether to use the real world metar or that that has been inserted by a manager. Now you can check the weather before you fly, just like in real life!

Calendar Title - The Bold white writing at the top of each day on the calendar is normally used to display notices, event updates or web updates that we think you should know about. This is going to stay the same, so keep an eye out, it will save you a lot of time if a manager or other members that know, are not around.

The Calendar – Working with Gordon, Laurence and Andy, I have designed a new calendar layout that will hopefully make finding out the information YOU WANT a lot easier. The ‘What’s Happening This Week’ menu is at the very top of each day. Click on the worded links to take you to the relevant information. By clicking on Flight Plans, a new window will appear listing flight plans relevant to this week/day. This could be for the contract flight , event, or a route that we think you would enjoy. I will upload 3 different types of flight plan, FSX GPS ready, PMDG FMC ready and a PDF worded document for those that want to fly manually. This plans can be loaded into FSX and saves you a lot of time finding one, loading and hoping it works. The ‘Live VA Map’ link will take you to an external page that shows you where our VA Planes are in the world.

Events – We can do some things but not everything, we need your help and creativity to provide members with exciting and interesting events that we can run throughout the week. If you have an idea, then don’t post it on the forum, let a manager know in teamspeak or you can send us an email managers@fsopen.co.uk

LearnToFlyAcademy – The FSOpen Learn To Fly Academy is now operational. We currently have 3 instructors, John Godfrey who is the senior instructor and myself and Joe Lewis are instructors. We are all going through our PPL’s and have decided that we shall teach you at our home airfield we are taught. You will be assigned to an instructor and will learn at their airfield. This is not to say that you will not get to fly somewhere else. If your instructor is not available and another is then they will take you. We want you to experience how flying procedures at different airfields, although follow the same rule book, are carried out differently. We will all be flying the Just Flight Cessna 152, however, as your progress we may ask you to switch to more detailed aircraft and or scenery to make the experience as realistic as possible. For more information speak to either, Laurence, John, Me or Joe in TeamSpeak and we can help you out. Else check out our section of the website: www.fsopen.co.uk/openpilots/academy

ATCO – The ATCO training program is back in force, however, myself and Christian Smith are working together to train mentors up to teach you. For those that have never heard of the ATCO Training System. It’s simple. At ‘FSPilots’, anyone can do ATC at any airfield, when nothing has been planned. However, when we host a ‘PRO ATC Night’ those who have been ATCO rated will be the only people to control and they will only control the position they have been taught up to. This is the same for VFR nights where a large number of VFR aircraft need to be handled effectively. All ATCO Students will be mentored and once at the appropriate standard, will be put in for a practical exam where they will be assessed by either Christian Smith, Mick McG or myself.

Pilot/ATC Ranks – As you know pilots and ATC are awarded stripes depending on their ability to do certain things. It’s being changed slightly. The Yellow Stripes are becoming IFR Rating and our new orange stripes are for VFR Rating. Much like the ATC Stripes, the orange strips will only be awarded to those who have been through the academy and are there to show their progression and achievement with us . All Students who have been awarded these strips can be seen on the academy students page, which can be easily accessed from the calendar menu under > ‘Academy Students’. This is also the same ATCO Students, which can be accessed by clicking > ATCO Students. In the future we aim to introduce this into the members page and display them next the person’s name on the forum, however, until such times the names will be displayed on these pages.

Well If you have read all of this post, which contains 1,138 words then WELL DONE and Thankyou! Hopefully this has made what is happening a lot more clear. If You have any suggestions then please Speak to a manager in TeamSpeak or contact us via managers@fsopen.co.uk

Thankyou Guys!
