Nigel Harvey ![]() 3rd Feb 2012 15:14:55 | Hi Robert,
Welcome back! Firstly, with the exception of Pro ATC nights - anybody can open any position as ATC. Open a tower and the traffic will come! We do charter flights in different locations around the world each week, so the majority of online pilots will be flying these routes - ATC is always appreciated at either end. Start by checking out the ATCO pages starting here - http://www.fsopen.co.uk/openpilots/atc/ These pages will give you all the information you need to get going - I'm guessing by the role you have applied for you already have a good knowledge of procedures etc - but these pages will help with the software set ups etc We have three instructors - Joe Clifford, Mick McG and Christian Smith. You can try to catch them in Teamspeak - or ask any of the ATCO rated members on this page http://www.fsopen.co.uk/openpilots/atc/students/ who will be happy to help with any questions. Regards, Nigel |
Mick McG ![]() 5th Feb 2012 17:12:05 | Rob, keep us updated on how your interview goes. I never did recruiting duties but I spent a long time as a SNCO ATCO before swapping my blue book for a yellow one.
I suspect the questions you get will focus more on why you want to join the RAF and what you can offer rather than what you know about ATC. They'll be trying to assess whether you have the potential to lead others so be sure to mention any evidence you have of your leadership qualities. You might be faced with a few scenario questions like what would you do if you were the Guard Commander and one of your guards reported a suspicious package outside one of the accommodation buildings for example. Tbh, they could ask you anything to gauge how you think you would react to any given situation - they're not trying to catch you out, it's just a method of seeing what sort of "box" you fit into. Try to make sure you have a good understanding of current affairs, particularly anything to do with the RAF - eg Prince William in the Falklands this week - is it a provocative act to the Argentinians, can you see their point of view, etc. Loads of other stuff too, eg impact of Chinese and Russian veto of UN Security Councils resolution on Syria etc. Aftermath of the "arab spring" - what impact could it have on UK security if any? Uk presence in Afghanistan, when is it due to end, what will be the likely impact to the Afghan people, UK etc. ATC questions will be few and far between unless you have an ex-airtrafficker on your board. Good to know what aircraft the RAF has in its inventory and where they're based; Good to mention any visits you've had to ATC units; Good to know the difference between what an ATCO does and what a fighter controller does (or Battlespace Managers as they are now known). Have an answer prepared as to why you want to join up as a SNCO ATCO as opposed to an Officer- don't be afraid to mention the better salary once you are qualified in the early part of your career but don't let this be the only reason. I hope it goes well for you mate. Look out on TS if you want to chat (or post on here) and I'll do my best to answer any burning questions. Good luck. M |
