Richard Stuchfield 19th Feb 2010 12:37:51 | you might want to go for the intel i5 processor rather than the AMD. i've not got one myself but have heard good reviews of it with FSX.
For £505 you could get the i5 and compatible motherboard, 4GB DDR3 1333 RAM, 1TB SATA drive and a GTX260 card (upgrade from the GTS250 card you specified) from ebuyer.com |
Dave Wave ![]() 19th Feb 2010 15:11:09 | Agree with the I5, prices may be coming down accross the range on intel on March 1st.
Agree with GTX260. |

Andy Paton 20th Feb 2010 12:19:06 | This hard drive info is from a previous post, hope it helps
This is one of the most important setup configuration, and close detail is needed. There are many types of hard drives including,IDE,SATA,and the newer Solid state(£160 for 32gb).If its performance you want, and your motherboard supports it,a RAID setup is the answer this will double your hard drive transfer rate(2xWestern Digital 150 GB VelociRaptor SATA 10,000 RPM 16 MB , giving a hugh(600Mb/s)and provide a vast improvement to FSX.Although onlt an example, any good quality sata drives coupled together(identicle drives) will improve system performance. http://www.legitreviews.com/article/699/1/ Regards Andy |
Dave Wave ![]() 20th Feb 2010 12:44:09 | This is the only graph I could find for fsx with AMD vs I5
It's pretty pants as a benchmark but I'd be concerned that the AMD chip is struggling with the GTX 285. |
Richard Stuchfield 20th Feb 2010 13:13:17 | I'm anything but an Intel lover. I've never owned an intel CPU before but the benchmarks for the i5 are way better and as the OP was interested in a PC for FSX then I'd have to suggest it. For a general multipurpose PC on a budget, I'd recommend the AMD too - the CPU is cheaper and the motherboards are cheaper also. |
Fatih Aydogduoglu ![]() 20th Feb 2010 14:05:11 | Everyone knows that Intel is ridiculously expensive. Price/performance comparison is everything these days. If you don't care about the money then go for Intel but I still wouldn't even if I was a millionaire. |
Craig Mills 21st Feb 2010 22:51:16 | The prob for me is that I cant spend a fortune on a new PC. I have a budget of £550 and if anyone can find a better set up than the one I have posted I would be very grateful. I had a look on Ebuyer and made the below list, I think I have included everything I need to build a decent machine. The only game I play on PC is FSX so not fussed about beating Crysis for graphics lol.
The AMD chip I have listed was recommended by a mate who works in IT. 1 x Foxconn A7DA-S 3.0 790GX Socket AM3 VGA DVI HDMI Out 8 Channel Audio ATX Motherboard 179129 £67.73 £67.73 1 x AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition 3.4GHz Socket AM3 8MB L3 Cache 125W Retail Box Processor 186428 £116.55 £116.55 1 x Crucial 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 1333MHz/PC3-10600 Memory Kit CL9 1.5V 166995 £76.58 £76.58 1 x Samsung EcoGreen F2 1TB Hard Drive SATAII 32MB Cache - OEM 164282 £49.95 £49.95 1 x Asus GTS250 Dark Knight Edition 512MB DDR3 DVI VGA HDMI Out PCI-E Graphics Card 173803 £83.50 £83.50 1 x Galaxy Black Mid Tower Case with Blue Bubble Light LED Strip - 450W PSU 136491 £27.81 £27.81 Over to you guys. I am by no means an IT expert so would appreciate some more ideas. |
