| Monarch flight turns back after 'engine fire' | |
Harry Tarling ![]() 4th Aug 2010 20:27:43 | Passengers onboard a Monarch Airlines plane had a nasty surprise when their flight was diverted back to Birmingham after a reported fire in the left-hand engine.
The plane, carrying 213 holidaymakers to Tenerife, set off at 18:45 and returned to Birmingham airport ten minutes later. Several eye witnesses said they saw black smoke and flames billowing out from one of the plane's engines and heard a loud bang shortly after take-off. Monarch said a problem with the left-hand engine forced its shut down, and as a precautionary measure the flight was diverted. Monarch said its engineers found no indications of a fire on the Airbus A321. All passengers and crew disembarked the aircraft safely. Passenger Clive Beckett told BBC News that his original flight was put back as they were told the plane had technical problems and they would be boarding a plane from Greece instead. He said: "People were crying. We thought we were going to die." As the plane started to climb into the air he said passengers heard a "huge bang" followed by another one and his wife saw a "sheet of flames" come out of an engine. He added: "It all went quiet then the pilot said, 'This is your captain speaking. This is Code Cobra, Code Cobra' and the cabin crew reacted. "Then the captain said, 'We have lost an engine.' "The plane was shaking quite badly. It tried to level off and he said, 'We're returning straight away.' "We thought the plane was just going to come down. We were over houses." Those onboard the horror flight were due to fly out of Birmingham at 06:30 this morning but their flight has been delayed again. |
